/ how it works

How to calculate GST and QST

In Quebec, both taxes are calculated on the selling price: 5% of GST, then 9.975% of QST on the same price. The QST is not calculated on the GST. Each tax is rounded to the cent, then added to the price.

GST = $100.00 × 5% = $5.00
QST = $100.00 × 9.975% = $9.98
Total = $114.98

Working back from a tax-included amount

Divide the tax-included total by 1 plus the combined rate. In Quebec, that is 1.14975. The taxes are then recalculated on the amount found.

$114.98 ÷ 1.14975 = $100.00

Sales tax questions

What are the GST and QST rates in Quebec?
GST is 5% and QST is 9.975%, for a combined 14.975%. The QST rate has been 9.975% since January 1, 2013.
Is the QST calculated on the GST?
No. Since January 1, 2013, the QST is calculated on the selling price, like the GST — not on the price plus GST. On a CA$100 sale: CA$5.00 of GST and CA$9.98 of QST.
How are the taxes rounded?
Each tax is rounded to the cent: a fraction of half a cent or more goes up to the next cent, below that it is dropped. That is why the QST on CA$100 is CA$9.98 and not CA$9.97.
Which rate do I charge a client in another province?
The rate depends on where the supply is made, not on where your business is located. For example, a good delivered in Ontario carries the 13% HST, even if you sell it from Quebec. The Canada Revenue Agency publishes the place-of-supply rules.
Does this calculator apply to every product?
It applies the general rate of each province. Some supplies are zero-rated (0%), such as basic groceries, and others are exempt: in those cases, no tax is charged.

Your quotes and invoices can do this math for you.

In CRM PME, the taxes on every quote and invoice are computed from the client’s province, with your registration numbers printed on the document.
